Christmas Sale: Gameloft Doing The $.99 Thing
Calendar16 Tue, 20 Dec 2011 20:53:47 UTC +00:00
We don't celebrate a single holiday at TouchArcade Tower unless Gameloft throws a sale in celebration of it. And, guys, it looks like we're going to have Christmas and New Years in 2011. Starting now, you can grab, uh, a bunch, of the publisher's better games for that price, including the startlingly good NOVA 2. We've got the list, so check it out if below if you're interested about what Gameloft is selling. Also, as we kinda mentioned already, NOVA 2 is our pick out of this list. If you're a fan of the Assassin's Creed fiction, Altair's Chronicles isn't all THAT bad at $.99, either. Low bandwidth Version | The HD version for the iPad is here: Critter Chaos HD We also have a lite version for FREE! Check it out here: Critter Chaos Lite We are an indie game studio and we are excited to present our first release. If you guys Read More

Raccoon Rising [99¢] from Romper Games is a delightful game about a sleepy raccoon trying to survive when his forest is invaded by an army of robots and their deforestation machinery. After watching the trailer (below), you might expect an endless-vertical jumping game, as it resembles NinJump [Free/HD]. But, it's actually more like a vertical platform game, because you're not constantly jumping and can find places to stop and plan your approach upwards, through the obstacles. Also, it's level based, so you're not always restarting from the very beginning. The little raccoon's simple story is told through comic-strip cut-scenes as he journeys through four worlds, including a temple, Tanuki forest, a ship called the 'Salty Sprocket' and finally, a city. Each world features different graphics, music, enemies and obstacles, but the goal is always to progress upwards until you reach a gate, which shuts behind you. Each time you reach a Read More
It's a good time to be a word game fan. Every few weeks a new genre standout arrives, ready to tide you over until the next big hit. Now App Store superstar Zach Gage (Unify [$1.99/Free], Bit Pilot [99¢], Halcyon [$1.99]) has thrown his hat into the word game ring with SpellTower [$1.99] . Those of us who fit in the Venn diagram intersection of iPad owners and word game fans benefit -- SpellTower is elegant, clever and fun. Not that it's entirely unique. We've all played any number of games that make use of SpellTower's main mechanic. Presented with a grid of letters, you spot a word and trace a path through its letters to select it. You can trace in any direction, loop diagonally back on your path, and make words of any length past two. And if that were all there was to it, this would be a Read More

Price Drop: Some Indoor Fun
Calendar16 Fri, 21 Oct 2011 23:08:00 UTC +00:00
Posted 10/21/2011 at 3:08pm | by J Keirn-Swanson It's fall and it's rainy (especially in our neck of the woods), so you'll be looking for some indoor fun these days. We've got games and music for you, and something to celebrate a little fall classic you might know as the World Series. Save more than just pennies on these apps, with big big price cuts.  This iPad only isn't a true price drop, but we couldn't not bring this one to our music loving readers' attention. Moog Music Inc. has created an awesome synthesizer for the iPad chock full of dials and waveforms. It's a total steal at only $0.99 but this special introductory price lasts until some time midway through November when it gets jacked up to a whopping $29.99, so you'd be a fool to pass this up -- even if you only some day plan on buying an Read More
The name Bullet has been thrown around for a while now as one of Gameloft's upcoming games by loose-lipped beta testers, and we've really had no idea what to expect given it's basically impossible for them to come up with a game title (Or, codename, I suppose) than that. Today's details come care of apparent YouTube watchdog Rafael Forse who caught Gameloft in the process of uploading two trailers, apparently forgetting to hit the ever-important "private video" checkbox in the process. This is easier than it sounds, and has caused some drama for us too in the past-- Oddly enough, with a Gameloft game. Knowing what we know about Gameloft, and how much they re-purpose their various game types, it seems reasonable to think that Bullet is either a third person adventure game sort of like BackStab [$6.99] or even a Grand Theft Auto style game like Gangstar: Miami Vindication [$6.99]. Review: Gameloft BackStab
Calendar16 Wed, 29 Jun 2011 18:29:00 UTC +00:00
Company: Gameloft S.A. Players: One Price: $7 Compatible: iPod touch 3G/4G, iPhone 3GS/4, iPad, iPad 2 Editor-in-Chief, iLounge Published: Wednesday, June 29, 2011 Category: Games - iPad, iPhone + iPod In one critical and laudable way, the new 3-D action adventure game BackStab ($7, version 1.0.0) represents a major step forward for leading App Store game developer Gameloft: it is the first truly universal iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch game we can recall from this company, which previously sold "HD" and non-HD versions of its past games for separate devices. We are truly thrilled by the fact that BackStab works on iPhone 3GS/4s, iPod touch 3G/4Gs, and iPads at whatever their maximum resolutions are, and really does a great job of spotlighting the different devices' graphics processors and screens. BackStab isn't quite as ambitious visually as Infinity Blade, but moving away from device-specific game releases is a big step for Gameloft Read More

On his quest for vengeance, Blake will employ many skills to dispatch and escape his enemies. BackStab for iOS: Assassin's Creed goes Caribbean
Calendar16 Fri, 24 Jun 2011 21:53:49 UTC +00:00
"Psst! Hey, buddy, don't look now, but your feet are missing." From the first moments of its animated opening, which includes an execution, an implied rape, and a graphically slit throat, it's clear that Gameloft's BackStab deserves a stronger rating than "12+." Since when is it OK to expose 12-year-olds to "Frequent/Intense Realistic Violence"? I guess that's the world we live in. I know parents who let their 8-year-olds watch violent, R-rated movies, which puzzles me to no end. Anyway, if the name alone didn't cue you in to BackStab's modus operandi, now you know. It's an extremely violent game. But fun, if you can overlook the bugs. It's like wandering into the middle of a "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, but without Jack Sparrow. Instead, you take on the role of British naval officer Henry Blake (guess the Gameloft devs are fans of "MASH"). At least, you start off as Read More
'BackStab' Review – Assassins of the Caribbean
Calendar16 Thu, 23 Jun 2011 23:54:58 UTC +00:00
Gameloft's BackStab [$6.99] was released for Xperia Play a few months back as a timed exclusive, but now that it has finally arrived on iOS as a universal app, we get to take a look at the studios take of Assassin's Creed via Pirates of the Carribbean. Which is to say, it's an open world action adventure game with lots of jumping around and stabbing things. The core of the game relies on the same parkour and action mechanics of the Assassin's Creed games on consoles. That means the bulk of the game requires you to run around a somewhat open world and jump from object to object. Control wise, you'll get a virtual thumbstick and some buttons to control sword swipes and jumping. Combat is a button mashing affair and while you get some counter moves, you don't get a block, so most battles can be won by hitting the attack button repeatedly. Touching Read More
Get Your iOS Swashbuckle On With Gameloft's Backstab
Calendar16 Thu, 23 Jun 2011 17:24:34 UTC +00:00
Posted 06/23/2011 at 9:24am | by Andrew Groen You'd be forgiven for mistaking the recently released iOS game Backstab for a mid-level PSP game, but it's actually the latest surprise from the iPhone 3GS/4 hardware. Companies like Gameloft continue to push the graphical envelope on the system, and if Backstab is any indication there's plenty of room left for games to grow on the platform. Backstab is a game very much in the same topical vein as Pirates of the Caribbean, while its gameplay seems to resemble the Assassin's Creed series with its copious amounts of climbing and stabbing. This is something of a refreshing new take for Gameloft as it's not an obvious ripoff of any single game. It takes inspiration from multiple games, but after Order & Chaos and Sacred Odyssey we're happy with just about anything original. Backstab was released earlier today with iPhone/iPod and universal versions that Read More
BackStab
Calendar16 Thu, 23 Jun 2011 12:08:06 UTC +00:00
BackStab is the newest universal offering from Gameloft, compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, and is most easily described as “Pirates of the Caribbean meets Grand Theft Auto meets Assassin’s Creed”. Yes, it’s that good. BackStab puts you in the role of Henry Blake, a man out for justice on an 18th century Caribbean Island with no regard for the law. Gameloft went above and beyond with their 3D environment, and it is absolutely gorgeous (and that truly isn’t a word I throw around lightly). Before you’ve played a moment of BackStab, the opening movie sequence lets you know you aren’t in for a typical iOS gaming experience. This isn’t a game you’re likely to put down in a few minutes, rather, you’ll quickly become immersed in BackStab’s story and want to complete mission after mission. BackStab truly plays like a next-gen portable title, and is the next Infinity Blade Read More
