The Best App for Counting Calories: Lose It!
Calendar16 Wed, 18 Apr 2012 18:11:03 UTC +00:00
Posted 04/18/2012 at 11:11am | by AJ Dellinger Every New Year, millions of people around the world pledge to lose weight by exercising and eating better. Many sadly do so with a piece of triple layer chocolate cake in their mouth. But we can't really blame them -- with busy schedules and easy access to junk food, it can be difficult to maintain an effective diet and worthwhile workout regimen. Simplify these tasks by downloading Lose It!, an app designed especially for those trying to stay on top of their fitness goals. Once you start a free Loseit.com account, you'll be set to track everything you do from within the iPhone and iPod touch app. From caloric intake to exercises, it'll all be processed by the app and spit out in fancy-looking graphs and data tables that serve as a great motivator -- and occasionally a reality check. Starting by setting Read More

Hopefully many of our favorite items will also be of interest to you. Please feel free to comment on our selections, and suggest picks of your own. Check out this week’s picks after the break. Espresso  [ v 2.0.1 ] My pick this week is Espresso, a web development tool from MacRabbit. I am currently enrolled in a web design class at my local university, and on occasion do paid web development. I’m not particularly great at it, and certainly can’t handle the more advanced Javascript functionality. However, I am pretty comfortable with HTML and CSS. Apps to kickstart your New Year's resolutions
Calendar16 Sun, 01 Jan 2012 20:15:00 UTC +00:00
With the first day of the new year falling on a Sunday, it's is a great day to organize whatever resolutions you've made. Here are a few apps to get started with. I'm spending my day getting my tasks lined up in 2Do ($6.99), which is one of the most reasonably priced to-do apps; it not only looks nice but packs in a lot of features. We took a look at the app in October and were impressed with the intuitive interface. I keep it synced between my iPad and iPhone using Dropbox. If you're looking to cut down on paperwork and implement a scan-to-cloud solution, you can invest in a Doxie Go for quick and painless scanning to the cloud service of your choice. If you already have a scanner or multi-function printer but you'd like to move to cloud storage of your scans, give the $19.99 ScanDrop for the Read More
by Women’s health and fitness magazine Self launched its public beta of a mobile, text-based diet program Monday. The Self Diet Tapper sends subscribers five texts per day to instruct them what and when to eat and drink, as well as exercise. The diet, devised by a team of registered dietitians and fitness experts, isn’t particularly strict or formal. It’s more of a reminder system for healthy living, chiming in at key points of the day to tell participants to eat a high-protein breakfast so they don’t reach for a doughnut at their 11 a.m. meeting, or to stay hydrated in the afternoons, says Self editor-in-chief Lucy Danziger. “What’s most appealing is that users will be in control so they can choose whether to act on the gentle tap,” she says. “They don’t have to think about any formal diet plan or second-guess themselves.” Subscribers can also log into self.com/diettapper to Read More
148 Pounds: Episode 1 – Lose It!
Calendar16 Wed, 22 Jun 2011 19:03:21 UTC +00:00
By Ryan Wood on June 22nd, 2011 Check out the first week of 148 pounds, my journey through the appstore trying to shed the pounds. Welcome to installment 1 of my 26 week journey to lose weight using the App Store and all its glory. If you missed the introduction article, check it out here. As of today I can say that the start has been… SLOW. I’ve lost a pound or two, but it fluctuates so significantly that I can’t say I’ve really committed quite yet. I’ve got a meeting set up with the weight watchers people soon, so I’ll hopefully use that as a motivator, as well. Even though I don’t have a good update on progress for you, I thought it was important to introduce you to the first and most likely the main foundation app I’ll be using throughout the process. As the title of the article Read More

5 Diet Apps for Smartphones
Calendar16 Wed, 02 Feb 2011 04:30:17 UTC +00:00
Many of us go on diets from time to time, to lose weight or simply eat healthier. In this post we look at 5 smartphone apps that help you manage your diet. Common amongst these apps is the ability to track the nutritional value of foods. Some, such as DailyBurn, even allow you to scan foods to discover nutritional information. Others, such as the official WeightWatchers app, are designed to complement an existing offline diet plan. Whatever your personal diet needs, below is a selection of smartphone apps to get started with. Most are iPhone apps, but search "diet" in your App Store of choice to find similar apps on other platforms. DailyBurn is focused on fitness in general, but has impressive nutritional tracking functionality. It claims to have over 350,000 different foods in its database, the largest of the apps covered here. The app gives a breakdown of nutritional information Read More

American Heart Assn.'s Pocket First Aid and CPR app. (Jive Media) |By Francesca Lunzer Kritz, Special to the Los Angeles Times "Is there an app for that?" When it comes to consumer healthcare applications for smart phones, the answer, increasingly, is yes. There are now close to 6,000 consumer health apps, according to a review published in March by mobihealthnews, which reports on the mobile health industry, and more are being added every day. Many are free, or cost $1 to $10 to download. Some physicians are concerned about the reliability of the medical information provided by many of these apps, which offer advice and information on a wide array of health topics, including how to find a doctor, first aid for an emergency and exercise instructions. And they worry that consumers could follow an app's guidance for, say, monitoring high blood pressure, and leave it at that — forgoing visits Read More

As you prepare to feast, it's not too soon to consider the impact of all that turkey and stuffing. The free Lose It! [iTunes Link] has been out for a long while now, and it's an app that people nearly always bring up when the conversation turns to good exercise/calorie tracker apps. With good reason: at one point I managed to lose over 15 pounds, and it was at least partly thanks to Lose It! on the iPhone. Its extremely intuitive interface and vast database of foods and exercises made it incredibly easy for me to track my progress and restrict my caloric intake. The one thing I always thought was missing from Lose It! was the ability to sync information back to the Mac. The app itself had limited ability to track trends over time, so I always wished Lose It! had some way of getting that info off my Read More

HealthyWage: Get Paid to Jog and Other Exercise Motivators
Calendar16 Mon, 05 Oct 2009 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
Employee wellness programs just got wired. HealthyWage launched its early beta release today. Users track their protein, fat, carb and sodium consumption via the HealthyWage social networking site and gain an interesting incentive to improve their health - money. A corporation sponsors users to meet health-related goals in the hopes of either improving the health of its employees or simply forging a relationship with health-conscious consumers. The company's first challenge is a body mass index (BMI) challenge. Users with a BMI of 30 or higher are asked to cut down to a BMI of 24.9 by October 2010. HealthyWage users are given a chance to commit $200 of their own money towards their goals in order to receive up to $1000 upon completion of the BMI challenge. Those who choose not to commit their money, receive $250 for a successful reduction of their BMI. Judging by the rising trend in personal Read More

By Rene Ritchie, Saturday, Apr 25, 2009 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb, bloggers and forum crew alike, will bring you our current favorite, funnest, most useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone (or iPod touch) related, they’re fair game. So who’s on deck this week and what are our picks? Find out after the break! I have been using G-Map US East for the iPhone now for a couple of months. Why wait for FULL GPS Navigation with Turn-by-Turn with Software 3.0 when you can have it now. All that is lacking is the audible cue to turn, but it has excellent visual cues. Easy to use and fast calculations make this one a winner! Workout Recession Tactics
Calendar16 Tue, 21 Apr 2009 20:00:53 UTC +00:00
My friends over at Crossfit Virtuosity recently posted a 100-day six-pack challenge. After I committed to the program, it only took me a few minutes to set up a way to track my progress and have a new workout sent to me everyday. Oh, and it only cost me 99 cents and can all be managed from my iPhone…awesome. First, as suggested, I went over to Tumblr and set up a blog to monitor my progress. After I had my Tumblr rocking a theme I liked, I clicked on the “Goodies” tab to retrieve my Tumblr blog’s email address (you can email posts directly onto the blog). I took this email address and entered it into a new contact on my iPhone called “Tumblr.” I’m using three iPhone apps to help me make/track progress: I know that there are tons of fitness iPhone apps out there, but I like the simplicity Read More

Great App. A few updates would make it perfect for my needs.
hornsofglass 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
After searching and trying many similar applications for my iPhone, I have found Lose It! to be the one that is staying on my iPhone.
Great for On-the-Go Daily Tracking
mandermu 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This app is beautiful, easy to use and could be the tool you need to stay honest. I've tried other online trackers before to count calories, fat, carbs, etc., but those were all on the computer. The computer isn't following you around in your purse or your pocket like your iPhone. It has really made a difference to me. A few times I have been to dinner and thought "Shoot, the minute I order this, I have to put it into Lose It and I'll be OVER for the day! Noooooo!"
they sell your info!?
Long Branch 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Thought I'd try it...didn't like it and then, before I could really look at it, I read the review about the company in Oregon selling my information (using information to improve an app is one thing--collecting my information for profit is something else entirely). The app has been deleted.
Excellent Interface
ragnarokzwei 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is great for calorie and exercise management. One thing missing is the ability to see your total carbs, fat, and other nutrients for the day, you only see them for individual foods. The other big thing missing is up wifi backup or sync option. Not a big deal for weight tracking (at least for me, this is "non-essential" information, so if my iPhone loses all the data... No big deal). I was about to buy one of the competiting programs. Very happy that I saw this free app first!
Great App
MozfanMS2 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love this app, very intuitive. I got this app and another food journal at the same time. After three days of using both to track my food intake, I stopped using the other one completely. This app allows you to search for generic and name brand foods (supermarket and restaurant), create your own foods, browse through exercises, and edit everything. It also allows you to see your days and weeks in a graphical format so you can compare your net calories to your budget (which it calculates based on your weight and goals). I have been very pleased (and successful) with this app and after just a few days of use, it becomes really easy to keep track of calories consumed and expended. Highest rating. Also, if your goal is to maintain, not lose weight, it will calculate caloric goals for that too.
Lose It... an impressive application. You must try it
Claymaster 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have tried all the weight management apps to date and this is an impressive first pass. Struggling with weight management is tough and it is all about tracking and feedback. I encourage developer to add a weight graph along side the calorie graph... make the time frame adjustable for best display at the desire of the user. Great search tool and optional portion control and fractional volume or weight. Outstanding... CaloryGuard - watchout, you have competition.
Really great app, very customizable
Tim T. 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a great app! Only thing missing is the ability to sync to my desktop or to a website, that's the reason for 4 stars. The app seems to be really solid and I haven't had it crash on me yet so syncing is not a big deal right now. I use this in tandem with RunKeeper, great combo!
AWESOME!
Jeff Y 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is an awesome application. I tried several different ones and this one works best for me. It is simple to use, fast, and really encourages you to make better eating choices. Using the recipes under the more section you can create whole meals that repeat. For example I eat roughly the same breakfast 5 days a week. Now with one recipe I have the whole meal covered. What a great tool!
Needs more exercise choices!
cherrybooks 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was surprised to find yoga and pilates were not included in the preset exercises. Also, I would like to be able to keep a more accurate weight count, since my scale includes decimal points. Also, while it gives me a goal of calories to stick to each day, it doesn't give you an exercise goal. A nice app that includes food and exercise, but I wish it had more options.
Reallly well done - highly recommended
dahvide 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
If you are serious about losing weight, and you are willing to really make the effort, without silly diets, this is for you. You set a goal (be realistic) and then enter everything you eat and before you know it you will realize that you have been fooling yourself about what you eat and will make real progress toward your goal. Also, "Lose It!" shows you how important exercise is because when that is added to your daily tally you see imediately the benefit that burning another 400 or 500 calories has on your daily totals. Entering your meals and exercise is very easy because the application has a large database of foods that are easily searchable. Whats more, once you have entered your foods, the next time you enter a meal the application remembers the foods that you eat most often. Try it for a couple months and see real, lasting benefits!
Best of breed by miles
BillyOK 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
One of the most polished apps I've yet seen -- and, with respect to LIVESTRONG, the absolute best of its kind whether you're trying to lose weight or simply like keeping track of your day-to-day nutrition and activity. I'm shocked it's free. But I'm not complaining.
Awesome!

Amanda Stanford 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love it! I'd give it 5 stars if there was a graph to visuslly to track weight loss progress.
Nice design, great potential, not there yet

Let me say this first: I really liked "Lose It!" and still believe it has a great potential, so I do hope the developer keeps working on it.

OCDsufferer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been looking an app like this that had a data base and also allowed me to add my own food without having a cluttered and difficult to use interface. This app is the best I've come across, and I've tried all of the free apps and most of the highly rated paid apps. This by far is the best!
Awesome

thisismyreview 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been trying out a few weight-loss apps in the past few weeks, and this is the best one I've seen so far. It is very user friendly and I love how easy it is to add custom foods. I recommend Lose-It to anyone who would like to track their meals, exercise, and weight on the go!
Calories are wrong!
lc818 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
I really liked this app after having it for a couple days. Went to McDonald's one day while still on a diet with Lose It! (got a side salad) and noticed that the amount of calories in almost every food from Mcdonald's was wrong. Nowadays they have those nutrition tables that come on the mats on the trays. After noticing that the amount of calories in my side salad was different on McDonald's nutrition table, I went through the whole menu to find out that pretty much everything in Lose It! (at McDonald's, at least) was wrong. Deleted the app after that. Figured if it isn't going to be accurate, then it's totally pointless.
can't believe it's free
mythreegirls 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is one of the most well-designed, useful apps I've downloaded. It's so easy to log food and activities, and you can add your own recipes. I've used it for a couple of weeks now and it's really helped me to stay on track. The only thing I wish it would do that it doesn't currently is show daily totals for fiber, protein, sodium, etc. (It has this info for individual foods.)

I have lost 35lbs in 10 weeks! This app has changed my life! Thank you!
Major Privacy Implications
matthewcmead 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
This application harvests your data and sells it to a third party. I would pay $10 for a version of this app that kept your data private. Great design but the tradeoff and implications of sharing this information outweigh its use.
Solid!!
dgcastellanos 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Too great for a free app, IMO. This app has liberated me. Thinking about my actual budget motivates me to go to the gym, to more closely watch what I eat, and to eat more when I'm hungry without being afraid of going over. Best of all, it helps me strategize for the day or the week - a salad now for a hearty Valentine's dinner later. You may not be able to powerfully customize meals so much, but if you do the calculations or a recipe by hand and then create a custom item then you can use it as many times as necessary. Suggestions: some finer tuning of the excercises feature, such as specifying 'arms' or 'legs' day. Maybe this is outside of the scope of the app, but it helps with planning and looking back. GREAT job developers. Five stars well deserved!
Great ease of use!
Randyatsea 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Update: I've been at 70 lbs off for two months solid, maintaining a 4 lb range, only because of this app. Its amazing. My body responds robot-like to the calorie limits. I now know the "mysteries" and plateaus i experienced before were likely old fashioned unknown over-eating. The fact that every exercise means you can eat more that very day is awesome and inspiring. Try this with brutal honesty. There's nothing like the feeling of looking right in clothes. Shopping on the small end of pant sections is unreal to me. Who knows how many years I suddenly added to my life. This app is really important (to me). Go for it! se this to maintain my weight loss (lost 60 last year)... It's wonderful for maintenance! Everyone here talks about how they lost a few pounds on this, but I think it's an awesome tool to "prevent" weight gain. Consider adding your own foods. Honestly, do each of us eat hundreds of different items? I put in my Jenny Craig foods and a few other other foods as they come up. Look on the box, research on the Internet, or look at the provided database for help judging the calories. You really don't need to rely on the provided data as more than a guide. Exercise becomes rewarding as the calories for the day jump up because you did some. This is fun! And weight loss never usually is. Try it!
What's up with license agreement?
Gator Jim 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
I am not a suspicious person by nature, but when I open this ap and saw PAGES of a license agreement I had to agree to before I could use program, I got worried.
I hate diets. This is not a diet.
Scuba Snack 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I hate diets. This is not a diet. This simply shows you how your day & week are going. You really want that bowl of ice cream, you enter it into Lose It BEFORE you eat it. You can see that if you eat the big bowl that you normally would that you would use up too many calories. This allows you to choose a different desert, smaller portion or simply add more exercise.
Needs More
WadeFL 2.0 stars Version: 1.2
This would be one of the best applications for diet analysis were it not for 3 very critical shortcomings. The first is that it is extremely limited in its nutrient data. Counting calories is fine and this app is good for that, but it's virtually useless for those who want a more holistic measure of their nutrient intake (vitamins, minerals, fat, protein, etc.). Secondly, it should offer all the units of measurement for every item, such as ounces, teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, slices, pieces, etc. And finally, when custom foods are entered, it's left up to the user to determine the calorie content. For example, if I enter a ham sandwich and enter all its ingredients and their respective measurements, the application should determine the total calorie content for the food as a whole based on those entries. Requiring the user to determine the calorie content pretty much defeats the purpose of the app.
Great Self Help Diet Control
Big John 101 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
When I first got Lose It!, I used it as a little game just to see how many calories I was eating each day, this was on Dec 5, 2008. I was amazed at my intake.
great app!!
planetmango 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
every bit as good as weigh watchers online but without the monthly fee! well organized and easy to use. UPDATE: weeks later, this is still one of my most used apps. Incredibly useful for staying on track. UPDATE: months later, this app helped me lose 25 pounds and helped me learn how to keep it off!! Get it. Use it. It works. Period.
Lost 20 lbs. So far!!!
jondoss 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
20 lbs. GONE!!! I've been using this app for a couple of months, and like so many other reviewers, I had no idea just how many calories I was putting into my body everyday. It was absurd! This is easily the best free app out there for those of us looking to lose a little weight. It's completely changed the way I eat. UPDATE: I have now lost a total of 41 lbs. and have gone from a pants size 38 to 34. I started at 239...now I'm 198. UPDATE X2: I've lost 50 lbs.
Still missing key feature
Big John MSU 2.0 stars Version: 2.1
Users desperately need the ability to change the measurement used when entering in the amount of a food eaten. What exactly is a tablespoon of eggs (for all eggs other than whole) when you already have entries for whole eggs? I don't drink my water by the cup, I drink it by milliliters. This may seem like bickering about a minor issue but when it becomes difficult to enter food, you stop doing it and the application begins to lose its utility.
Easiest weight loss EVER!!!
Skinny Now 5.0 stars Version: 2.2
My FAVORITE app and method for weight loss, by far! It's easier than anything I've tried. I can easily see my calorie budget and stick to it. Has a great database, and let's you create your own, easily! I work out way more, even if only for 5 minutes, because I can log it!! I've lost 8 lbs in 6 weeks!
Amazing...and free!
Tabletmeister 5.0 stars Version: 2.2
Not only is the best nutrition and exercise tracker I've found out on the AppStore, it's also the most fun. It helps you set a goal, calculates how to get there, and even lets you add friends to share and challenge in your goals. The online integration is amazing, and lets me pull reports of everything entered. My favorite feature lets you enter a recipe and then divide it up into portions...and it does all the nutrient calculations for you! The built-in database is surprisingly comprehensive. Spend some time to explore what's in this program, and you'll be blown away. The most amazing part is that it's free!!!
Great App

What about the addition of a barcode scanner for tracking what you eat? Maybe in a paid version?
Great app, very little training
PadeOne 4.0 stars Version: 2.1
For a FREE app, it is great. It has a pretty good food database and it has allowed me to refocus on my goals. There are some minor issues which I don't mind which is the portion sizes, sometimes onces could be more useful than cups, but if you remember that a cup=8oz everything kind of falls into place. Overall, a great tool for losing weight and focusing on what you need to do.
I'm REALLY losing weight!
Beckmeisterfuller 5.0 stars Version: 2.2.1
I had no idea how much I was eating until I got and started using this app. I'm losing weight by thinking about what I consume. It only takes a couple minutes a day. My co-worker lost 30 lbs. And I'm losing each week. Easy to use too. I highly recommend it !
Exercises

This app is great! It has tons of preloaded exercises and foods and adding new ones is simple and user friendly. The interface is sleek, simple, and informative. It's my favorite app by far - even counting the mandatory Apple apps. It's beautifully designed, extremely functional, and totally easy to use. And the support is great too! Love it!
Super!

My husband has lost 53# and now I am working on losing my excess. It helps immensely to have a log and an automatic calculation of both consumed and spent calories.

I started using Lose It! last October when I was 208 and by January I was 178! I have been fluctuating between 175-182 since. This app is very easy to use; it's very easy to log in your meals and exercises and the results speak for themselves. It's very similar to Mint.com in that it gives you a user friendly GUI that enables you to track your weight loss/gain. Highly recommended!
Best health tracking app you can get!

CoachXander1987 5.0 stars Version: 3.7.2
I have tried most of the other apps, like LIVESTRONG, MyFitnessPal, and couple of others. LoseIt! beats them all hands down. Especially now with barcode scanning, the only thing that it was lacking. But now it's perfect! Thank you LoseIt! team!!
Awesome App!!!
BPowerBroker 5.0 stars Version: 3.7.2
This app is great!!!!!!! It is easy to add foods and find foods. I have over 70 apps yet this is the first app I decided to review. I want it to have 5 stars. Just want to request developer look into away to write notes/journal on the day of calculation. The reason being is what if it's my birthday and I don't want to calculate, or what if I am fasting. I want to be able to look back on that day and see why I didn't track. Thanks
