Comics on the iPad. A match made in nerd heaven, right? Well, today it gets even better with the announcement that ComiXology and Marvel Entertainment have entered into a multi-year deal that sees the former exclusively distributing the latter’s digital catalog of English language single issues. Though the deal was actually signed on May 1, the announcement was delayed to make way for a particular movie premiere that some of you may have participated in over the weekend, Peter Phillips SVP and General Manager of Marvel Digital Media, told TechCrunch. Neither company would elaborate on the length of the deal but both agreed that the partnership would allow them to advance the art of digital storytelling. “This partnership will allow us to innovate and advance the digital storytelling and reading experience,” said ComiXology co-founder and CEO David David Steinberger. Phillips added that ComiXology’s “technology is by far the best.” Though the Read More
Posted 03/20/2012 at 3:33pm | by J.R. Bookwalter It seems as if the new iPad’s potential “TemperatureGate” is flaring up and burning even hotter than this morning (okay, enough with the bad puns), but Apple is all like, “Dude, we don’t know what you’re talking about.” Between you and us, it sounds like another one of these non-issues that will wind up becoming a class action lawsuit. Yawn… new Apple product, new headaches, we guess. Thankfully there’s more going on today than just warmed-up iPads, so here’s the rest of the news for Tuesday, March 20, 2012. Judging from our Twitter feed, the whole “new iPad gets too warm” thing we reported on this morning is spreading like… well, like a wildfire started by a hot iPad, maybe. We quipped earlier that Apple may have a “TemperatureGate” on their hands if the complaints keep up, but Cupertino is playing it cool Read More
Marvel bringing more than 80 graphic novels to iBookstore
Calendar16 Wed, 29 Feb 2012 00:00:55 UTC +00:00
That’s right Marvel fans, it looks like you will soon be able t0 download your favorite Marvel content through Apple’s iBookstore. The comic book-creator announced today that it would be bringing more than 80 of its graphic novels to the iOS book market. Of course, you can already access Marvel’s work through its standalone application. But this move will make the content, which includes popular Spiderman, Avengers, and X-Men titles, available to a much wider audience… Considering that iOS 5 automatically prompts users to install iBookstore on launch, you have to imagine that the app’s user base is fairly large. Not to mention that Apple announced last month that iBook downloads were approaching the 200 million mark. So this looks like a smart move by Marvel. And if you can’t wait to get your hands on some of the company’s classic comic content, you can download the New Avengers Vol 1: Read More
Marvel Brings Over 80 Graphic Novels to the iBookstore

posted by Jacob Penderworth on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 2:50 pm.   Originally submitted by Jacob If you’re an avid reader of Marvel’s comic books and also own an iPad, then you’ve probably been pondering whether to read some comics on your iPad for a change. Because really, wouldn’t it be great to read them using Apple’s beautiful iBooks app? (This is, mind you, assuming that you do not have a Kindle.) Yes, Marvel does have their own app with all their most popular comics available as in-app purchases, but since iBooks has always been great for reading, why not use it instead? Well, Marvel must have thought the exact same thing because they’ve released over 80 of their graphic novels on the iBookstore for comic book and iBook readers alike. Read on for a few of the particulars on Marvel’s recent release. “Marvel is taking the world of comics Read More
By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Sep 20, 2011 | Marvel is starting to offer Digital Comics Cllections for iPad, the digital equivalent of the traditional trade paperback, which combines together the single issues of a story line into one volume. Only 10 titles will be available at first, focused around the Ultimate Universe and current movie properties. Hopefully more will be available soon, and hopefully DC will jump on this bandwagon as well. If you’re in the mood to try it out, head on over to the Marvel Comics app [App Store link and pick up Astonishing X-Men (by Joss Whedon) and Ultimates (by Mark Millar) now. Read More

Posted 07/23/2011 at 3:24pm | by Andrew Groen Even if you've never stepped foot in a comic book store in your life, you don't have to sit out on the action. Comic book readers for iOS let anyone indulge in stories of adventure and superheroes. In honor of Comic-Con, we found 10 of the best -- some are free apps that let you buy comics as in-app purchases, and others are paid library apps where you upload digital comics you already own. But at least one should suit every true believer's needs. 1 of 10 ComicsComics, more commonly referred to as Comixology after its developer, is notable for one specific reason: it's the only place where you can buy comics by DC along with publishers, which makes it a must-have for comic fans. The free, universal app may not be the best software for reading, but when you've got the weight Read More

Music piracy rose to epidemic levels at the beginning of the 2000s (although, according to Wired, those days are now over). There were many causes of this growth in piracy -- high speed internet access, easy-to-use P2P software -- but perhaps the biggest accelerator of music piracy was two-fold: the emergence of devices that allowed us to easily copy and then consume music (namely CD-burners, and then MP3 players) away from the computers we downloaded them on, and the reluctance of the record industry to embrace new technology. In other words, once people had the hardware for consuming digital music, the record industry failed to give listeners the digital music they wanted at a reasonable price and in an easy-to-access centralized location. The same factors that lead to mass music piracy are now in place to disrupt another flavor of media -- comic books. The excitement and media attention around Free Read More

Comic Viewer For iPad: The Best Yet?
Calendar16 Sat, 05 Jun 2010 17:31:51 UTC +00:00
Comic Viewer for the iPad is just another generic comic reader app. Or is it? We’ve seen eReader apps like iBooks, magazine apps like Time and Wired, and comic reader apps like Marvel and IDW Comics. But although all of these apps seem to dominate their respective fields, what we haven’t got is a King of comic reading apps. Currently, iBooks seems to be the dominant eBook reader, and Wired is still the smoking hot magazine app on the block (for now). Yet the comics region, however, is still pretty much unclaimed – debatably until now. Comic Viewer, which was released yesterday, is a new contender. The application is priced at $4.99 and works pretty much in the same way as iBooks. A library view is implemented which shows your entire collection – a collection that can be added to either through iTunes, or through in-app purchasing over Wi-Fi or 3G. This Read More
Will we pay more for magazines on the iPad?
Calendar16 Wed, 02 Jun 2010 16:00:00 UTC +00:00
Business Insider has a post up from AdAge about magazine pricing on the iPad, and they've got bad news for anyone planning to transfer all of their magazine subscriptions to Apple's magical device: It'll cost ya. While a year's worth of goes for $12 from the publication's website (or even cheaper if you can pick it up from Amazon or that random kid wandering your subdivision selling subscriptions), the iPad subscription will cost $29.95; that's over twice as much. You can buy a year's worth of on Amazon for just $10, but one issue on the iPad costs you half of that. Why? At first, the cost seems like a ripoff; publishers don't have to pay for paper, ink, or postage, so you'd think the content should actually be cheaper. Then you calculate in the cost of interactive designs and features, researching new technologies, and creating new workflows, and creating an Read More

Marvel comics have graced us with their presence for years and most recently provided some of the best action hero movies to date. There is practically no-one within an earshot of a city in america who hasn't heard of at least one of the comicbook characters created by Marvel. Spider-Man, X-Men, the Hulk and so many more have been created by the immensely huge company. Now there is an app for both iPhones and iPads alike to view many of the major comic books put out by the company. The app is essentially an iBooks app for comic books, with it own store right within the app. Users can search for and purchase a comic for a price and immediately get to reading it. One nice feature was the ability to let the app take you through the comic. By enabling the feature, it would automatically zoom to different parts of Read More
Editor-in-Chief, iLounge Published: Friday, April 9, 2010 Category: iPod, iPhone, and iPad Gems: Apps, Games + More Welcome to our first non-gaming edition of iPad Gems! As with our earlier game-focused version, we’re looking at a huge collection of different iPad apps today—20, actually—giving each a relatively brief overview. Unlike the prior column, we’re looking here at apps that either didn’t exist on the iPhone and iPod touch, or never previously received attention in one of our Gems pieces before. They’re unrated for the time being, but our descriptions make clear whether they’re worthy of your time and attention. (Danke, David!) With the iPad's arrival this weekend, a holiday weekend for many Americans, this new iPad owner had the chance to see the device in action. In fact, "see" is the operative word here. Not, "play with myself," as is the case with most new tech gadgets I purchase. Instead, I simply watched from a distance as, over the course of the day, the iPad found its way into the hands of nearly every family member from ages 4 months to 87 years old. The incredible thing? No one walked away confused, frustrated or disappointed. It did precisely what they wanted it to do and with such ease that my tech support was not required - not even once - allowing me to sit back and relax...with an old-fashioned, paper-based magazine. After hearing the hoopla from the iPad launch, the crowd of "not-so-early" adopters has likely been left wondering if this is Read More

Quick Review: Marvel Comics for iPad
Calendar16 Sun, 04 Apr 2010 14:41:31 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Sunday, Apr 4, 2010 | Marvel Comics for iPad [Free - iTunes link] and iPhone [Free - iTunes link] finally brings one of the big two old media giants to the mobile age — albeit kicking and screaming. And… this is the future of comic books. They look gorgeous on that big 1024×768 screen. There’s a ton more functionality shown off in the video below but they get the core experience right and that’s the most important thing. There are other comic book stores and readers for iPad, and we’ll be looking at them, but Marvel deserves huge kudos for even entering this space — unlike DC which continues to sit on the sidelines, treating the digital revolution as confusingly as their cross-over events. (What?) Now I’m a comic book geek from way, way back. Among my first comics were the now-Classic Dark Phoenix Saga from the X-Men. Read More

Good: easy reader, great graphics Bad: no access to my digital comics from the Marvel.com website, limited choices in comics
Weird panning glitches
punkassjim 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Trying this out on an iPhone. When I zoom into a full page, or even a single panel, some weirdness happens when I pan around. First, if I'm zoomed in on a full page view, dragging around feels sluggish, as if there's a slight drag. I move my finger, but the image pans at a slightly slower rate. But, if I'm zoomed into a "frame" on a page, then panning is extra fast. Faster than my finger is moving. In either scenario, if I keep dragging (say, a swipe or two) after I've reached the edge, it'll take me just as many swipes in the other direction to start panning back the other way. Hard to explain, but hopefully that makes sense. Also worth noting, there is no "flick" gesture support: if you're zoomed in, and you flick in any direction, the panning stops when your finger leaves the glass. It's jarring. Scrolling a list view is jerky even on a 3GS, even with a relatively short list. The UI is less intuitive/fluid than I'd expect…perhaps it's more polished on the iPad, but yeah…the iPhone experience of this app is coming up quite a bit short.

2 dollars? Really? 99 cents seems more realistic for a digital comic, but obviously Marvel is trying to set the price to make a profit off of material they have packaged and sold time and time again. Let's just hope the creators of all of these comics are getting some sort of kickback from digital sales.
